In honor of Yahoo Mail's 16th birthday on Tuesday, the service is getting a revamp — inspired in part by mobile.

The most noticeable part of the update is its new rich themes. Designed to take advantage of high-quality mobile screens such as Apple’s Retina display, the new themes incorporate Flickr photos into Mail, giving your email experience an entirely new look.

Yahoo is currently working with the photographers of 24 different Flickr images and created customized themes around the colors in those images.

Yahoo tried out using Flickr photos earlier this year with the launch of Yahoo Weather, an app that displays photos in the background specific to the type of weather in your area.

Yahoo is taking this experience into consideration to help create the ultimate Mail experience.

“This is probably one of the first releases where you’ll hear us say, ‘We learned from the mobile and we added that feature set or that design pattern over to the desktop version,” Jeff Bonforte, SVP of Communications at Yahoo told Mashable.

Many users are using Yahoo Mail primarily on mobile and want some of the service's mobile features on the web version, too.

Things used to be the other way around, Bonforte said — Yahoo might try to take features that were popular on the desktop version and repackage them for mobile. Now, Yahoo is trying to take smart features from its mobile version and bring them to the desktop.

The Mail experience on the web now mimics its mobile app in many ways. Tuesday’s update will go live on desktop and mobile simultaneously.

Users can choose to take advantage of the new themes or opt for a more basic white background with back text. Your selected theme on the desktop will also be your theme on the mobile version of the app.

Yahoo is also making all of its premium mails features such as POP access and mail forwarding free to all users. The only paid feature for Yahoo Mail will be a $49.99/year charge for an ad-free experience.

Yahoo will also increase the storage space in mail, upping the total amount of storage per user to 1TB — the same amount of space it currently offers Flickr users for free.

The new Yahoo Mail is available Tuesday for the web and iOS, Android and Windows 8 tablets. The updated look will first roll out first to English-speaking users, but will eventually roll out worldwide.
