Microsoft’s recent investment of $15 million into popular location-based
app Foursquare means that it will use the app’s data in its anticipated
Cortana voice assistant as part of the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 release.
The data will apparently help Cortana in providing dining and entertainment suggestions based on user location, as well as discounts and other offers in the user’s locality.
Cortana is Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Siri and Google Now. But the Foursquare data will also be put to use in Bing powered searches. It seems like Microsoft is serious about giving competition to Google and Apple and that’s only a good thing. The company is expected to unveil Windows Phone 8.1 in April at BUILD 2014.
