PlayStation 4 will require a patch out of the box to add many of the console's new features. This patch will also unlock basic functions like its DVD and Blu-ray player.

On its blog, Sony posted a list of capabilities included in the PlayStation 1.50 upgrade, which will be available when the console hits shelves on Nov. 15. This list includes the ability to use the handheld PS Vita as a second screen, the PlayStation 4's video capture and online multiplayer.

Users will be able to enjoy gaming, Blu-ray and DVD video contents on their PS4 systems, according to the blog post. Users must connect to the Internet to activate these new features, including the DVD player, upon first use. A Sony spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that the patch and one-time Internet connection are requirements for "a playback license management system installed on PS4."

The 300 megabyte day-one patch isn't a surprise, as most computers and consoles now require updates upon purchase. Last year's Wii U release, for example, had a famously large day-one update.

Sony's blog doesn't mention timing, but one can reasonably assume the patch will be available as North American consumers get their hands on the PS4 in mid-November.

According to Sony, some features, like the ability to suspend and resume the console quickly, will not be available at launch.
