Rockstar Games is giving Grand Theft Auto Online players half a million in online currency to make up for problems caused by overloaded game servers.

Since Grand Theft Auto Online — a free add-on bundled with GTA V that lets players explore Los Santos with their friends — launched Oct. 1, players have complained the game has been very unstable. Problems ranged from inability to connect to servers to GTA Online over-writing characters already in the system.

Rockstar, to its credit, has been up front with fans during the problems, and has issued a few updates to correct issues. Currently, it's recommending players be extra careful when saving their games, and not assume anything has autosaved.

To be eligible, players must play Grand Theft Auto Online any time during the month of October, as well as download a new patch next week that the company says should squash the remaining bugs. Rockstar says it will make two $250,000 deposits into players' accounts, staggered to balance the in-game economy. Rockstar said it hasn't decided when those will occur, but players will get a heads up.

"For players who experienced cloud server errors, connection issues, and lost game progress and characters in these first days of GTA Online, we hope this GTA$ helps to facilitate a fresh start or makes your continued life in Los Santos and Blaine County extra sweet," Rockstar's blog said.

In Grand Theft Auto Online's store, $500,000 in in-game cash costs $10 in real money.
