SAN FRANCISCO — The new version of Samsung's Gear smartwatch will run on
Tizen, not Google's Android operating system, the latest attempt by the
South Korean electronics giant to develop more of its own software and
services, according to three people familiar with the situation.
Galaxy Gear 2 is said to run on HTML5 version of Tizen, which should supposedly help flock more web developers to the device. The report also says this is being done to prevent Google’s dominance in the wearables market after sweeping the smartphone market and holding a good chunk of the tablet market.
How that move shapes out remains to be seen though. We saw the original Galaxy Gear receiving lukewarm response, so the second one will have even a bigger challenge at hand. Although one thing is certain. Having Tizen instead of Android shouldn’t impact its compatibility with Android smartphones from Samsung.
