Samsung has won back the trust of Apple with its shovel-ready 14nm FinFET production process, while the TSMC foundry's 16nm wafers can only start being cut in mass quantities in the second quarter of next year, it seems.
Apple, which was earlier dependent on Samsung for providing the chipset as well as the DRAM for its iOS devices. However, it started looking elsewhere when both the companies were engaged in patent infringement lawsuits. Apple reportedly awarded Taiwan’s TSMC the contract for making the A8 processor based in the 20nm process.
However, the new report suggests that Samsung has overtaken TSMC with its 14nm process, which has helped it bag the latest order from Apple. Either that or the relationship between Samsung and Apple is finally thawing after freezing over last year.
As is the case with reports involving component manufacturers, don’t expect any confirmations coming your way from any company.
