Motorola Skip Unlocks Your Phone With Just a Tap

Believe it or not, the average smartphone user unlocks his device 39 times a day. If we're talking about a power user, make that 100 times.

Motorola released a tiny gadget called Motorola Skip on Friday for its new Moto X smartphone that lets you unlock the device without typing in passcodes. Since it takes about 2.3 seconds to unlock your phone each time, this thumb-sized clip could save you a handful of minutes throughout your day.

Motorola Skip, which comes in gray with a black accent for now (more colors will be added in the fall), unlocks the Moto X smartphone in just a tap.

The device can be clipped to your shirt, belt loop or anything else you keep handy, such as keys. The only downside: You must keep track of the tangible gadget, which is programmed specifically for your phone. Motorola didn't detail how the technology will work, but one can assume it will use sensors and near-field communication (NFC) technology similar to Samsung's existing TecTiles stickers.

"Our smartphones are central to our digital lives ... the keys to our friends, our finances, and a lot of our personal information," the company said in a statement. "Security is increasingly important, but it shouldn't be irritating."

Each Skip comes with three Skip dot stickers, which can be placed throughout the house, car or workplace to unlock the Moto X. The Skip will be included for free with all orders of the Moto X. Pricing for additional Skip dot stickers has not been revealed.

The move shows that Motorola is making an extra effort to stay relevant and competitive in the smartphone market. The Moto X will come to five carriers in the United States at the end of the summer. It aims to pinpoint your preferences more than any other mobile device by capitalizing on voice-recognition technology and other features.
