This includes, but is not limited to, work environment and the company. I assume policies and perks are included. Using the gathered data, “<em>Glassdoor then uses a “proprietary algorithm” to determine an overall ranking “based on the quantity, quality and consistency of reviews.”” </em><br /> No matter what that proprietary algorithm may involve, I think it’s safe to say that at the end of the day, Glassdoor determines just how happy employees are with their jobs and the company in general.<br /> You know what would be fun to know? The details of what exactly makes a tech company awesome to work for. While rankings are always fun for stat nerds, there’s something better about discovering just what a company does for its employees. Identify (and Flaunt) Your Quiet Strengths</h2> Before you can begin changing how others see you in the office, you have to identify for yourself what your strengths are. It wasn’t until opening up that I gained a reputation as a trusty source of thoughtful, interesting information.<br /> There are other strengths you can’t simply bring up in conversation — but, for instance, if you’re an exceptionally good listener, you can show it by referencing the story your boss shared with you months ago or asking a co-worker how her kid is doing at his new school.<br /> <h2> 2. Know When to Rise to a Challenge</h2> When I discovered that I was an introvert, I felt that I finally had permission to opt out of activities that strained me. It was a huge relief to say no to after-work drinks or mingling at extended family gatherings when I didn’t feel up to them. I knew that honoring my introversion with alone time meant I’d be an overall happier, sharper and more creative person — in both my personal and professional life.<br /> However, for a long time, I used my introversion as an excuse to avoid golden opportunities as well. Like the time my local news channel called because they wanted to interview a resident web designer on-air, and I purposely waited too long to call them back. Or the many times I neglected to send follow-up emails and build meaningful connections with successful, well-connected people in my field.<br /> Now, I realize the difference between those times when I was honoring my introversion and times when I was caving into fear, and how important it is to separate the two before the latter threatens to hold you back.<br /> So, next time you’re thinking of saying no to an opportunity under the guise of being an introvert, pause and think about the real reasons behind your decision. If it’s all dread or disinterest, then you’re probably right to skip out. But if fear is suggesting you run away from something with clear potential to enrich your career, consider rising to the challenge.<br /> <h2> 3. Tell People What to Expect From You</h2> One big problem with introversion in the workplace is that it can often get misinterpreted. An easy way to get around this is to just come out and tell people what they can expect from you.<br /> Take, for instance, a very spunky copywriter I know. Her online personality is loud and bold and fun. When I stumbled across her blog, I assumed she was an enormous people person with boundless energy for her clients and friends. Then I read her “About” page, where right at the top, she refers to herself an introvert who hates talking on the phone. Had she not mentioned this, and had she answered the phone with anything less than booming enthusiasm, a potential client may have been taken by surprise. Insulted, even!<br /> My husband is another excellent example. When he found his intense solo work becoming frequently interrupted by chatty co-workers, he worried that he was coming off as rude. But instead of letting misunderstanding harm his reputation, he implemented a system where he used red, yellow and green magnets on his desk to communicate whether he was “in the zone” or available to talk. This system was soon spoken of admiringly around the office, not to mention solidified his appeal as “the quiet genius.”<br /> Being an introvert in the professional world can be tough at times, but it’s no excuse not receive the recognition you deserve. It doesn't, however, have a wake-up alarm feature like the Fitbit or Jawbone, nor does it track sleeping habits.<br /> The SE still focuses on Fuel points, which is the main metric used throughout the band. Nike is trying to create Fuel points with a scientific algorithm behind it, bumping it up from 50 data points to 250 in its latest device. One of the biggest difficulties from previous models — or in other wristband trackers in general — is it doesn't give you specialized credit for the type of movement you do. Now, Nike will award more Fuel points for a bike ride than, say, clapping your hands. <br /> And sure, you should get credit for making dinner and walking around the kitchen, but it weighs that data based on high and low-intensity activities. You can also label certain periods, such as playing tennis or going for a walk, to better keep track of everything, including calories burned. For those into gamification, there's trophies and achievements that can be earned along the way.<br /> <h2> Final Moves</h2> Competitors can learn a lot from what the Nike+ Fuelband SE has to offer, from calling out workout sessions to nudging you to get up for five minutes. If you’re like many users, Twitter is a space to connect with friends <i>and</i> develop your online brand.<br /><br />Figuring out how to balance these two worlds can challenge even the most socially savvy. You don’t want to share a personal detail that might negatively impact you at work. On the other hand, you don’t want to bore everyone with a robot-like account that can only discuss business matters.<br /><br />If you’re trying to find the right balance between personal and professional, here are a few tips to maintain a fun yet public-facing Twitter account.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><h2>1. Accept that Twitter is public.</h2><br />The first step in finding the right balance is recognizing the fact that Twitter is a very, very public network. It’s not like a college party or night out with your friends. Rather, the network resembles a professional conference or networking event. The key difference is your actions are visible to anyone (presuming your tweets aren't protected), not just those who attended the event. Anything you discuss on Twitter is part of your public digital footprint; therefore, you should always assume anything you discuss on Twitter will be seen by a potential client, employer, partner or colleague.<br /><h2>2. Don’t be a robot.</h2><br />Twitter’s public nature can scare professionals away from sharing anything outside of work topics. However, if you only talk business, you’re not letting anyone get to know you. And ultimately, people do business with people, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be (a very conscious version of) yourself.<br /><br />Imagine yourself at a networking event or in the downtime right before a meeting. Unless it’s directly relevant to your job or you don’t care if you alienate members of your community, stay away from any talk of religion or politics. And it probably doesn’t need mentioning, but you should also avoid mentioning any kind of illicit activities.<br /><br />While avoiding politics is a general rule of thumb, the rule doesn’t apply to everyone. @FranchiseKing mixes resources for franchises with political opinion. He knows his community and is willing to take the risk of alienating some for expressing his views.<br /><h2>4. Know the difference between personal and private.</h2><br />You’ve probably cringed at some posts that seem to share “too much information.” Avoid TMI yourself by recognizing the difference between personal and private. For example, personal is mentioning your child took her first steps; private is sharing anything diaper-related. Personal is talking about the great dinner you had last night; private is rehashing every detail of the fight you had with your partner on the way to the restaurant.<br /><h2>5. Be considerate of your audience.</h2><br />It’s one thing to share a few messages about your kids or your favorite baseball team, maybe the occasional post about your car or kitchen remodel. But things will get boring fast if 90% of your posts are singularly focused. No one likes the person who dominates the dinner party conversation by bringing everything back to his recent vacation. Use your general Twitter account to show your diverse interests, and consider forming a private Facebook group to post daily updates of your newborn, or join a dedicated sports social network to discuss the Golden State Warriors to your heart's content.<br /><h2>6. Interact with others.</h2><br />One of the most natural ways to let your personality shine involves personal interaction. Never approach Twitter or any other social media network as a one-way broadcast. Join in on what other people are saying. Inject a personal tone or joke into your replies. Keep in mind, however, that some back-and-forth banter between you and your friends is acceptable, but you’ll want to take an in-depth conversation to DM or a phone call before it goes too far and bores everyone else.<br /><h2>7. Don’t take things too seriously.</h2><br />This last rule can often be the hardest to remember (particularly when it follows a list of dos and don’ts). At the end of the day, Twitter is all about conversations, shared interests and relationships. It’s shouldn't be overanalyzed.<br /><br />If you sit there and count every tweet to make sure you’re hitting some magic personal-professional post ratio, you’re sucking all the fun out of the process. Likewise, if you start thinking, "Okay, I need to post something funny today," it will come across as obvious and awkward. A sweaty grasp or one drink too many, and your high-tech work of art shatters into a kaleidoscope of tiny glass shards.<br /><br />Enter the juggernaut case market, which generated $2.2 billion in sales over the past 12 months — a 42% increase from the same period the year before, says Ben Arnold, analyst at the NPD Group. Perhaps that growth explains why Apple got in the game this release season with its Croc-like and leather cases, which it marketed as heavily as the new iPhones themselves.<br /><br />Despite Apple’s stab at the market share, however, there is one group Apple can't count on as case customers: its own devotees.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />“Keeping your iPhone in its most minimalist state is always preferred in design circles,” says Shayna Kulik, brand strategist and founder of trend forecasting site Pattern Pulp.<br /><br />Granted, the minimalists are hardly the majority: according to casemaker Otterbox’s internal and external research, the number of people who forego cases is as low as 15% of all owners.<br /><br />So who is this creative cult potentially sacrificing hundreds of dollars or more for the sleek look and feel of their case-free iPhone? For one, they seem to worship at the altar of Apple.<br /><br />Angel Jimenez de Luis tries to collect every iPhone he’s ever owned in its original packaging.<br /><br />“The iPhone showed the world that you can make a mass market luxurious item, and that good industrial design can elevate such a utilitarian and practical object as the phone,” says Luis, a New York-based tech writer for the Spanish daily <i>El Mundo</i>. “<a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="its-not-easy-to"></a><br /><blockquote><br /><div></div><br />It’s not easy to create a beautiful object. It's a shame to hide it behind a case when you find one.”<br /><br />Aubrie Pagano, CEO and founder of made-to-order clothing site Bow & Drape, agrees: "To throw a $5.99 plastic bedazzled cover over an iPhone corrupts its integrity."<br /><br />For this loyal fan base, the iPhone is not something just to be used; it's meant to be experienced.<br /><br />"Great product design deserves to be experienced as is — not with a bumper and boundaries around it,” says Brian Kalma, president at high-tech business wear startup Ministry of Supply. "I’m not buying a phone so it doesn’t break. I’m buying a phone because I want to use it; I want to feel it; I want to experience the product. That’s what’s so special particularly about Apple products."<br /><br />To Kalma and others like him, the iPhone is more than a status symbol — it’s an <i>objet d'art</i>.<br /><br />Self-described “alpha geek” Kane Hsieh says the iPhone is a masterpiece. “Apple’s design is led by Jony Ive, who’s almost worshiped as a visionary," says the computer science Harvard grad, who’s also an analyst at early-stage venture capital firm RRE Ventures. "Buying a beautiful iPhone and putting a case on it is like buying a piece of art, putting it on your wall, and then putting a sheet over it so it doesn’t get dusty. "That’s the cost of being able to hold the phone in my hand — it’s hard to say this without sounding sexual — and to run my hands over the aluminum backing and all over the phone. For a decidedly luxe object, even its own proponents consider the gadget disposable after a year or two.<br /><br />“I'll get a new iPhone every two years. How to Pitch Yourself as an Expert to the Media - Circles Tech

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">A friend of mine recently called and said she was about to draft a pitch promoting herself as a food expert to several broadcast outlets. She asked if I would take a look once she was done. Several days later, her email popped up. The subject? “This feels so weird.”<br /><br />You don’t need to be a PR expert to know that it’s much easier to tout a product than it is to tout yourself. But if you’re just getting your company, business or blog up and running, you likely don’t have the resources to recruit a full-time PR person or agency support. Which leaves the PRing — along with most other things — to you.<br /><br />As a PR professional who has happily pitched clients’ products and uncomfortably pitched my own brain, I can tell you: It doesn’t ever stop feeling weird. But it does get easier. If you’re struggling with how to promote yourself, keep these tips in mind.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><h3>1. Be Professional</h3><br />Pitching yourself will likely evoke a whole spectrum of emotions, but when it comes to the actual pitch, keep it business-appropriate. Most importantly: Don’t be overly casual (or no one will take you seriously), don’t be too verbose (or no one will read your email), and don’t be rude, arrogant, or obnoxiously self-promotional.<br /><br />This may sound obvious, but there’s an important differentiation between pitching yourself and pitching a product: When you’re pitching yourself, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="the-booking-producer-not"></a><br /><blockquote><br /><div></div><br />the booking producer not only needs to like what you have to say. Back it Up</h3><br />If you’re new on the speaking circuit or just looking to book your first interview, you’re going to need to really convince the booking producer or journalist that you’ve got the smarts they’re looking for. So beyond introducing yourself and your expertise, include relevant stats, articles and anecdotes to support your narrative. Explain what differentiates your expertise from other people talking about a similar subject — maybe it’s the research you’ve recently conducted or the access you have to key influencers in the industry — as well as why your expertise is especially relevant to the outlet you’re pitching.<br /><br />Each pitch differs, but here’s a general framework to consider:<br /><br /><br /><section><br /><ul><br /><li>In 2-3 sentences, introduce who you are, your expertise and what you’re pitching (e.g., to be considered for future food segments on the<i> Today Show</i>).</li><br /><li>Add 2-5 bullet points about why your narrative is relevant, compelling and timely.</li><br /><li>Add 1-2 sentences about why you’re perfectly positioned to be talking about this subject to this specific outlet.</li><br /><li>Add a brief bio with your high-level accomplishments, your availability and ways for people to reach you.</li></ul><br /><h3>3. Be Confident</h3><br />No matter what your expertise, there are likely topics or themes within that industry that you’re not as well-versed on as others. If you’re a food expert, like my friend, you may not be as knowledgeable about French cuisine as you are about Italian. Maybe your vegetarian recipes are lacking. But here’s the deal: No one needs to know that but you.<br /><br />When pitching yourself as an expert, you need to convince whomever you’re pitching that you are, actually, an expert. So tell your various and wide-ranging insecurities to shush, and put forward your smartest, most confident self.<br /><h3>4. But Don’t Oversell</h3><br />Remember that confirming an interview is not the end game — successfully promoting your brand is. So while you want to come across as confident and knowledgeable, you don’t want to B.S. your whole pitch. If you do, you’re only going to end up hurting your reputation — and future opportunities — by sounding silly on-air or getting blacklisted by the booking department. Instead, give yourself a bit more time to get up to speed on your industry.<br /><h3>5. How Much Is Yahoo Worth Without Alibaba? Not Much - Circles Tech

Sure enough, in a Tuesday call with investors, Chief Executive Marissa Mayer said Yahoo had made eight new acquisitions in the last quarter alone. But what Yahoo’s latest financial numbers really highlighted was how much the company is running two completely separate businesses: It is simultaneously a consumer Internet company struggling to eke out a living from ad revenue and a large stockholder in Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce darling that is twice as profitable as Facebook.<br /><br />The latter part of the business is clearly pulling the former along. Here’s how to think about it: Yahoo has a stock market value of $34.1 billion and owns a 24% stake in Alibaba. Estimates for the current value of Alibaba, which is planning an IPO, range between $75 billion and $125 billion. If it comes in at the low end of that range, Yahoo’s stake would be worth $18 billion, or just over half of Yahoo’s total market value. At the high end, Yahoo’s stake in Alibaba would be worth $30 billion — which would imply that the rest of Yahoo’s enterprise is worth as little as $4 billion, or 12% of its current value.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />Yahoo’s investment dates from a 2005 deal when it paid $1 billion for a 40% share in Alibaba, back when the Chinese e-commerce business was eager for capital and know-how. Their roles have reversed. Now Alibaba would be happy to be rid of its California hanger-on, which doesn’t bring much to the table anymore. Their arrangement now requires Yahoo to dump a big portion of its stake in Alibaba once it goes public.<br /><br /><br /><br />Mayer has made it a point to improve this relationship, and she seems to be succeeding. On Tuesday she said that Yahoo would be required to sell only 208 million Alibaba shares when it goes public, down from 261.5 million under their previous agreement. This could mean that Yahoo will get a significantly bigger benefit from any bounce in Alibaba’s value.<br /><br />Mayer is arguing that the rest of the business is heading in the right direction, too. Yahoo has reversed a decline in the number of people who use its services, and it now has 800 million monthly visitors to its core services, which don’t include Tumblr. It also has a new logo and a really nice looking weather app.<br /><br />This isn’t entirely convincing. Yahoo is struggling to turn those users into dollars. Emarketer says that Yahoo will claim 7.7% of the total online ad market this year, down from 8.6% in 2012. The firm also says that 2013 is probably the last year that Yahoo will be ahead of Facebook in digital advertising. Yahoo says this will take time. “The advertising revenue will start to follow that traffic trend. It’s difficult to say when,” Mayer told investors.<br /><br />Mayer needs to keep investors patient. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Imagine sitting down with a cocktail only to find a tiny, brightly colored boat zipping around the surface. Either you really need to be cut off or you’re looking at a booze-powered cocktail boat invented by foodie scientists. And, like other fruity garnishes, this one is meant to be eaten.<br /><br />The boat idea first emerged when Lisa Burton was pursuing a PhD in mechanical engineering at MIT and took a class taught by her adviser, fluid dynamicist John Bush. During the class, Burton learned about water-walking insects, which inspired her to construct a tiny fluid-propelled vessel with help from her friend, fellow mechanical engineer and designer Nadia Cheng.<br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />The fluid-powered boat is designed to have a hollow cavity in the middle with a slit in the back that allows the fluid you pour in to escape. When the boat sits on water with an evaporative liquid streaming steadily out of the back, the water acts like a rope that tugs the device forward. This is because there’s greater surface tension with the water than the liquid fuel.<br /><br />For the fuel, Burton originally tried everything from her kitchen that might work: soy sauce, sugar water, Tabasco, different liquors. She discovered that an evaporative fluid with low surface tension was ideal. Liquors performed far better than anything else, especially strong ones like Bacardi 151, which is 75% alcohol.<br /><br />The trick with the boats was to make them light enough to float on water and durable enough so they wouldn’t decompose in the water. Burton tried different materials including mixtures of candies, marshmallows and other food. They tasted good but didn’t function as well as those made from just wax or gelatin. ”The boats made of wax worked great, but were as tasty as flavorless wax can be,” she told <i>Discovery News</i>.<br /><br /><br /><br />Through John Bush, Burton and Cheng connected with science-minded chefs José Andrés, César Vega and the Washington, D.C.-based ThinkFoodGroup. In addition to the boats, the team also made an edible flower-inspired pipette that can be used as a clever way to deliver a modest liquid palate cleanser between dishes. This month the group published their results in the journal <i>Bioinspiration & Biomimetics</i>.<br /><br />“As soon as you set the alcohol-filled boat in your drink, it takes off and dashes around your glass for up to a minute or two,” said Burton, who is now a data scientist based in Austin, Texas. The motion is also fairly erratic due to both the boundaries of the glass and the remaining alcohol on the surface that does not evaporate or mix into the bath.<br /><br />Burton said they would love to commercialize reusable versions of the devices and are talking with MIT’s Technology Licensing Office about obtaining patents. 5 Challenges Women Entrepreneurs Face — And How to Overcome Them -Circles Tech

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Each year, more and more women set out on the journey to become successful founders and CEOs of their own companies. While these business-savvy ladies are inspirational to women with dreams of launching a startup, entrepreneurship remains a traditionally male-dominated territory, and there are still some significant obstacles that many female business owners have to face. Here are five of the biggest challenges of women entrepreneurs today, and how to overcome them.<br /><h3>Women entrepreneurs think they need to act like men.</h3><br />Most female business owners who have attended networking events can relate to this scenario: You walk into a crowded seminar and can count the number of women there on one hand. When women entrepreneurs have to talk business with primarily male executives, it can be intimidating.<br /><br />"When you own a business, you're constantly negotiating deals with many different people," said Hilary Genga, founder and CEO of women's swimwear company, Trunkettes. "Many times, with female owners, men think they can be dishonest or give her a bad deal because she's a woman — something they probably wouldn't try with another man."<br /><br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br /><br /><br />To compensate and protect themselves, women often feel as though they need to adopt a stereotypically "male" attitude toward business: competitive, aggressive and sometimes overly harsh. But Genga believes this is the wrong approach to take.<br /><br />"Be yourself, and have confidence in who you are," she advised. "Don't try to be a man. You made it to where you are through hard work and perseverance, but most importantly, you're there. Don't conform yourself to a man's idea of what a leader should look like."<br /><h3>Emotions and nurturing skills can affect their business.</h3><br />Though trying to act like a man doesn't guarantee success for a female entrepreneur, allowing her "feminine" qualities to stand in the way of getting things done isn't necessarily recommended, either. By nature, women are more emotional and nurturing, which can sometimes be a hindrance to running a business.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="for-men-a-business"></a><br /><blockquote><br /><div></div><br />"For men, a business is mostly about the bottom line, but for women, it's more than that,"</blockquote><br />"For men, a business is mostly about the bottom line, but for women, it's more than that," said Delia Passi, CEO of WomenCertified, home of the Women's Choice Award. "We get emotionally connected, and that can hold us back from making the tough decisions. Connections are highly important to success, and nurturing strong professional relationships can go a long way. However, Passi reminded female entrepreneurs to also be direct and stay focused on their business goals.<br /><h3>Women often lack the support of other female business leaders.</h3><br />Long before she founded online women's eyewear boutique Rivet and Sway, CEO Sarah Bryar worked with undergraduate female engineering students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These "trailblazers," as Bryar described them, felt insecure about being in the minority as women who excelled in math and science, and longed for more camaraderie and support from female peers in their field.<br /><br />"The main challenge for female entrepreneurs is just like the challenge for female engineering students: There just aren't enough of us," Bryar told <i>BusinessNewsDaily</i>. "There aren't enough women to be role models, act as sounding boards, do deals with — in short, to create normalcy for women in leadership positions."<br /><br />Despite the quickly growing number of female executives and business owners, finding fellow women entrepreneurs to connect with isn't always easy. Women-focused networking events like American Express OPEN's CEO BootCamp are good places to start, as well as online forums and groups specifically created for women in business.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/null" name="opportunities-to-lead-do"></a><br /><blockquote><br /><div></div><br />"Opportunities to lead do exist for women,"</blockquote><br />"Opportunities to lead do exist for women," Bryar said. "There are ways to balance your time, but the perception is that you could be more effective running your business if you didn't have to deal with kids."<br /><br />Genga has learned to not take shortcomings on either front too seriously and to not beat herself up over the little things, like missing a class trip with her children. "Momtrepreneurs" have dual responsibilities to their business and to their family, and finding ways to devote time to both is key to truly achieving that elusive work-life balance.<br /><h3>Women entrepreneurs are afraid of failure.</h3><br />According to Babson College's 2012 Global Entrepreneur Monitor, the fear of failure is the top concern of women who launch startups. Failure is a very real possibility in any business venture, but Passi believes it shouldn't be viewed as negative.<br /><br />Bryar offered similar advice for female entrepreneurs, encouraging them to work through the moments of self-doubt that every business owner faces.<br /><br />"Work hard at ignoring that inner voice that may discourage taking action, speaking up or getting outside your comfort zone," she said. "It's something I struggle with myself, but I know fundamentally that I wouldn't be a CEO today if I hadn't taken chances to assert myself."</div>
