Google’s Eric Schmidt, who is known for his controversial proclamations, has declared that Android has a security advantage over its rival, Apple’s iPhone.
It was during the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo that the company chairman answered questions from Gartner analyst David Willis. The conversation went like this:
Willis: “If you polled many people in this audience they would say Google Android is not their principal platform… When you say Android, people say, wait a minute, Android is not secure.”
Schmidt: “Not secure? It’s more secure than the iPhone.”
Schmidt attributed this advantage to Android’s billion-plus device activations and stringent security testing.
There has been a long-standing criticism that Google’s operating system is a fragmented platform but Schmidt tackled this by saying: “With Android we have an agreement for vendors that you keep the Android stores compatible and that is a great breakthrough for Android.”
At the end of the session Schmidt said that “Android is very secure,” and went on to discuss the future of email, consumers’ privacy expectations and Google Now. “You will be happier with Gmail, Chrome and Android more than you can possibly imagine,” he said.
