A report on DigiTimes claims that Google could launch an Intel powered Nexus 8 tablet this year. The decision was likely made due to the weaker than expected demand of the Nexus 7 tablet.

With the 7 inch tablet market seeing stiff competition, the average price of a tablet in this category has dropped below $166. This has been due to the entry of numerous new vendors, including the likes of HP. Meanwhile, the second generation Nexus 7, which retails for $229 falls in the higher segment within this market. This has resulted in weaker than expected sales for Google.

The report further claims that the tablet could come with an Intel Bay Trail-T processor, although the company is also in talks with Qualcomm. If the company decides to go with the former, Intel might be finally able to get that pushing it has been vying to become a significant player in the handheld market. Also, it seems like ASUS is likely to be the vendor for the Nexus 8 due to its prior experience in manufacturing the acclaimed Nexus 7 tablets.
More info is expected after February. We advise you to take the news with a pinch of salt for now.
