Competitors lie HTC and LG have tried to use the same technology in their smartphones, but have had limited success. Well, they might have a better chance now since ST Microelectronics, the company that supplies the two axis gyroscope named L2G2IS to Nokia has now opened the deal for other manufacturers.
Of course that won’t change things drastically for Nokia or others, since there are already competitors like InvenSense offering gyroscope solutions for smartphones. In case you’re still not sure as to what OIS is, here’s a quick walkthrough. OIS on a camera allows to avoid the blur caused due to shake by moving the camera in the opposite direction. This comes in handy, especially in low light scenarios where the aperture needs to remain open for a longer period of time. Now there are several techniques that are used for the same and Nokia uses barrel shift type in its OIS system.
