Microsoft vice president of marketing Tami Reller, announced today that the company has sold over 200 million Windows 8 licenses to OEMs. Although the number looks huge, its pretty small compared to what Windows 7 was able to achieve.
It took Windows 8 sixteen months to reach the figure, while Windows 7 managed to sell 240 million copies in under an year alone (of course, Windows 7 was preceded by Vista, so that should have helped). At the end of one year, the number was close to a 100 million, indicating that the sales have slowed down instead of picking up. The shrinking PC market has been another reason why the sales have been tepid. What’s worse is the fact that these numbers are the licenses sold to OEMs in bulk and don’t actually reflect the copies sold to consumers, which might be even lower.
Microsoft is expected to roll out the Update 1 for Windows 8.1 in the coming days, but until the time it can get its OS on more tablets, we doubt there’s much the company can do to boost the sales of the OS.
