Smartphones have short lives and for most of them, even their manufacturers stop providing updates after an year or so after their launch.

Sony’s Xperia lineup from 2012 will suffer the same fate and would unfortunately remain stuck on Android 4.0 or Android 4.1. Sony has confirmed that a majority of its older smartphones will “not receive any further software upgrade support”.
The list of devices that will remain stuck on their current versions include Xperia arc S, Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion, Xperia acro S, Xperia go, Xperia P, Xperia J, Xperia miro, Xperia sola, Xperia tipo and Xperia U. Meanwhile, the fate of Xperia V and Xperia T is still uncertain, as both the handsets are under investigation for receiving the KitKat update. We wouldn’t get our hopes high, since chances are that they could share they same fate as their same aged siblings.
Although sad, its good to see Sony making it clear as to which devices won’t be getting updated and which won’t. Although it might be feasible technically (since KitKat has been designed to run on less powerful devices), the costs and resources involved in the process might have made Sony to come up with this decision. In the end, it will only help avoid the anticipation and the disappointment of not getting the update among the users. Still, if you’re among the disappointed users, you can get plenty of third party ROMs that can get the job done. The company has already plans to update most of its 2013 lineup (the high end phones at least) to Android 4.4 KitKat so it’s not really like Sony is playing evil here.
