Bloomberg reports that employees from Google X, which is known for its secretive research and projects, have met with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), sparking speculation that Google is working on a new product that includes biosensors for use in contact lenses.<br />

At least four members of Google’s staff attended the meeting, some of
 which have connections with Google X. The workers have also carried out
 research on sensors which can be used in contact lenses that help 
monitor biological data. On the agency’s public calendar you can see 
that Google met with FDA representitives who are responsible for 
regulating eye devices and diagnostics for heart conditions.<br />

Companies from both the fields of technology and medicine have 
trouble meeting the demands of federal oversight. It was only in 
November last year that the FDA made the Google-backed company 23andMe, 
stop sales of its personal gene testing because it hadn’t received the 
agency’s approval.<br />

Despite this obstacle Google’s CEO Larry Page has said the company is
 committed to making bets on research and development, even if the 
projects don’t necessarily produce large profits and revenue.<br />

“Our main job is to figure out how to obviously invest more to 
achieve greater outcomes for the world, for the company,” Page said 
during a call with analysts last July. “And I think those opportunities 
are clearly there.”<br />

There have been no details revealed as to what Google’s meeting with 
the FDA was regarding but Jennifer Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the 
agency, confirmed that the meeting did take place.<br />

Babak Parviz, who worked on the Google Glass project, has spoken 
about putting displays on contact lenses, that includes ones that 
monitor health.<br />

“Noninvasive monitoring of the wearer’s biomarkers and health 
indicators could be a huge future market,” Parviz wrote in a 2009 paper 
titled “Augmented Reality in a Contact Lens”.<br />

A program called SMSlivräddare —or SMSLifesaver — solicits people who have been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). When a Stockholm resident dials 112 for emergency services, a text message is sent to all volunteers within 500 meters of the person in need. Fitbit Force Is the Smartest Fitness Tracker Yet - Circles Tech

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">The Fitbit Force has only been on the market for about a week, and it's already making all other fitness wearables look out of date.<br /><br />The Force, which is available via Fitbit.com for $129.95 and will hit the store shelves of Best Buy and Target in the coming weeks, is part watch and part fitness tracker (and even part smart watch), displaying everything from the time to fitness stats directly on its OLED display. The wearer can access fitness info by touching a button on the left side of the display; data is shown for a few seconds before disappearing.<br /><br />The Force is the first-ever wristband fitness tracker to feature an OLED display and although it may sound like a small advancement, its inclusion is a huge addition. Other trackers such as Withings already include an OLED display, but this is the first wristband fitness tracker to do so. An OLED screen doesn't drain the battery as quickly as an LCD. And with the display, users no longer <i>have</i> to refer to an app to check their stats since most of what they want to know can be found right on the tracker. But there's still an app that provides a deeper look at how you're doing.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />With so much competition on the market from Nike, Jawbone and more, that in itself makes the Force stand out more than any other fitness tracker. There's a lot to love beyond the display too. But it's not perfect, especially when it comes to design and style. Here's a look at the beautiful, the ugly and where its biggest potential resides.<br /><h2>What the Force Gets Right</h2><br />It might not be a stunner on the outside, but there's so much to love about the Force. In addition to the OLED display — which displays crisp, easy-to-read data — it has a lot of wristband fitness tracker firsts, including an altimeter. This monitors how many stairs you climb on a hike or just throughout the day. What was most striking about this addition is learning how few steps I climb each day — seeing that dismal number is a constant reminder to take the stairs instead of opting for the elevator. In fact, that is what wristband trackers do best: they continually remind you to stay more active. It's significantly clunkier than the previous Fitbit (Flex), featuring a wider band and a thicker hub under the screen for the battery. Unlike the Flex, the battery doesn't snap out, which means you can't switch up the device with different color wristbands anymore. It comes only in two colors — black and blue — and two sizes: small and large, which could be limiting. Securing the wristband isn't simple, either; the rubber snaps take a bit of pressure to rest properly in place.<br /><br />Overall, the look is very masculine. No company has yet to perfect the look of the wristband fitness tracker and it's something the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch has been criticized for too: finding the balance of a connected device that is also fashionable. Its presence is overpowering on tiny wrists and feels heavy at 1.15 ounces. It's not the type of device you'd want to wear to a nice dinner. The Jawbone UP is by far the most aesthetic product on the market, but it doesn't feature an OLED display or any wireless connectivity. Once the device is paired with your phone, it can highlight the name of the person calling your iPhone, making it easy to keep track of calls while on a run (you won't need to pull out your smartphone). We didn't get to try the feature yet — it will be rolling out soon — but having access to this kind of "glanceable" information has a lot of potential for the Force and for any other tracker looking to follow suit.<br /><br />The Fitbit Force is priced $30 more than the Flex ($99), but it's a worthy upgrade for a few extra dollars. However, the Pebble smart watch also integrates with many fitness apps too and costs $149, just $20 more than the Force.<br /><br />If you want a fitness-focused wristband device, the Force is the total package. From the OLED display to sleep tracking, floor climbing and social integration, it has everything you need to get off the couch and keep moving. Nike announced on Tuesday the latest wristband fitness tracker in its lineup: the Nike+ Fuelband SE, which features a splash of neon color and aims to get you up and moving more than ever.<br>

The device comes in black but features color options such as crimson (red), pink foil or volt (yellow) on key parts of the band. The company said it will be available starting Nov. 6 in the U.S., UK, Canada, France, Germany and Japan. It'll cost $149.<br>

The news comes less than a week after the Fitbit Force ($129) — touting the first OLED display for a wristband fitness tracker — made its debut.<br>
<br>
The Fuelband, which looks very similar to its predecessor, comes with a few software enhancements for the FuelBand iOS app. For example, the Sessions tool tracks activities a user might do throughout the day such as a run or a gym session and monitors how much NikeFuel has been earned within that activity.<br>

At this point, the content available for mobile TV streaming is still limited compared to the wealth of content available with more traditional viewing methods. However, new TV-watching methods have popped up over the past few years, and these new avenues for visual entertainment have certainly swayed viewers.<br />

According to Telegraph.co.uk, 100 hours of content is uploaded to YouTube’s site every single minute. And Popwatch.ew.com reports that HBO Go downloads had already reached three million <i>back in 2011</i>.<br />

So, what’s the deal? Do people really want to start watching TV on the tiny screens of their smartphones? Many experts and speculators think so.<br />

<b>The bright future of mobile TV</b><br />

A lot of people have the concept of mobile TV on their minds. Some are excited about this opportunity while others are worried it’s the end of a 90-year reign.<br />

The trend toward mobile TV has been powered, in large part, by a movement called TV Everywhere. This information comes from Mashable.com, who claims that networks who embrace TV Everywhere set themselves up for success in this new era. Here are a few of developments in mobile TV you can enjoy now or can expect in the near future.<br />

The cooperation of major networks and providers</h3>

Now that mobile TV is popular, several networks are attempting to keep up with viewers’ quickly-changing habits. Broadcastengineering.com reports that ABC, CBS and NBC all have apps that allow subscribers to watch On Demand content from their smartphones or tablets.<br />
<br />
Providers often offer on-the-go streaming options for customers as a perk for their customers.  Not only cable providers, but many DSL providers such as Verizon offer these services.<br />

Live content streaming available on these and other platforms</h3>

As it stands today, most of the content available for mobile TV streaming has already aired somewhere else at an earlier time. But all of that might be about to change.<br />
<br />
ABC, the network that seems to be the leader in network adaptation toward mobile TV, released a new service back in May 2013. Mashable.com says it’s called Watch ABC, and it allows “authenticated users” to access live content from their local ABC network.<br />
<br />
To be an “authenticated user,” Mashable reports that access will only be granted to those who have a cable subscription.<br />
<br />
To justify streaming live content on mobile devices, the experts at Hightechnology-center.blogspot.com believe “one-to-many” broadcasting will be used, just like it is for network television today. That means that the content will be sent to all the mobile devices in the area, rather than to a single device at a time.<br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">As cooler weather settles in and the season for sniffles and sore throats looms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention won't be tracking the pattern of this year's flu.<br /><br />The government shutdown has furloughed much of the CDC staff, and FluView, the department's weekly Influenza surveillance reports, is frozen.<br /><br />In the shadow of the shutdown, a few online flu trackers — which usually serve as supplements to the CDC's official reports — continue to monitor the illness when the agency cannot.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />Flu Near You, a health site that tracks the flu through user-submitted symptoms, has seen a 100% rise in activity, according to Clark Freifeld and John Brownstein, who cofounded HealthMap, the program that started Flu Near You.<br /><br />Sickweather, an online social health network, has also seen an increase in use, founder Graham Dodge told <i>Mashable.</i> The website scans social media for public, geo-tagged posts that reveal illness. When someone posts "I'm sick," Sickweather adds it to its map.<br /><br />A 2011 report from Johns Hopkins University suggested that illness trends pulled from Twitter and official CDC reports tracked nearly identical patterns. The only difference: Twitter's results came about two weeks earlier since it tracks in real time without the delay of collection and qualification from an official agency.<br /><br />But while alternative means of flu tracking exist, they are not a perfect substitute for the CDC, said Susan Polan, associate executive director of public affairs and advocacy at American Public Health Association.<br /><br />APHA partnered with HealthMap to launch Flu Near You, and Polan helped the team develop the website. "They can quickly look at the situation and take action."<br /><br />While the CDC's FluView has been sidelined during the shutdown, not all of the center has gone dark. Following a Monday public health alert from the USDA about the salmonella outbreak, the CDC allowed nearly a full staff of furloughed foodborne illness specialists to return to work Tuesday, a CDC spokesperson told CBS News.<br /><br />Additionally, many state and local health organizations are still up and running.<br /><br />"We continue to provide federally funded services including flu surveillance, vaccine distribution and HIV services," the New York City Health Department said in an emailed statement.<br /><br />The department said it won't see an impact on its federally funded programs unless the shutdown continues into next year.</div>

Beware the Obamacare Scammers - Circles Tech

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Signing up for health insurance through the network of state and federal insurance exchange websites has proven difficult enough in its own right. Now, millions of Americans attempting to navigate the myriad of changes to the nation's health care system also have to avoid a legion of online scammers looking to take advantage of widespread confusion about the law's implementation.<br /><br />Officials around the country have warned those attempting to sign up for insurance about the existence of fake exchange sites designed to steal users' personal information and credit card numbers.<br /><br />"I can say with a high degree of certainty … [these sorts of scams] will come," Gary Davis, vice president of global consumer marketing at consumer cyber-security firm McAfee, told <i>Fox Business</i>. "We live in a world where people look at compelling events and look to do something malicious. This is just the nature of the beast."<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br />Christopher Budd, threat communication manager at cloud computing firm Trend Micro, charged that the sprawling network of federal, state and state-licensed third-party sites can make it difficult for people to tell a legitimate resource from a fly-by-night operation. Determining the good actors from the bad ones is crucial because these sites require enrollees to enter extremely sensitive personal information — in some cases for their entire families.<br /><br />"Put these two things together and you've got a situation where people are primed to give away their most critical personal information to legitimate sites but can't be sure of finding their way to those legitimate sites," Budd wrote. "This is a perfect environment for identity thieves and other criminals to put together bogus sites to get personal information they can use or sell on the digital underground."<br /><br />IT consultant John Bambenek wrote on the Internet Storm Center forum that, during the 24-hour period in which the exchange sites went live, more than 40 domain names were registered relating to the Affordable Care Act. While it isn't a given that all — or even most — of the sites that could ultimately be parked on these domains will have a malicious intent, the flurry of activity does raise the specter of fraud.<br /><br />"What makes the potential for Obamacare related scams to work is stability of the new site combined with some confusion to the details of the new law," wrote Bambenek. "Where there isn't clarity, fraud is possible."<br /><br />As a post on Trend Micro's <i>Security Intelligence</i> blog noted, spam messages about the new health care rules started flooding inboxes around the country weeks before the exchange sites even launched. These often official-looking emails typically linked to sketchy survey sites. "Spammers, unfortunately, see this as an opportunity to lure users into their schemes and disclosing personal information such as name, address, email address and the like," explained Trend Micro. "The bad guys can either sell these to other cyber-criminals or be used in other, more menacing threats."<br /><br />Similar scams have occurred in the offline realm as well. Scammers have also taken to posing as government officials and calling or texting to ask people for social security or bank information under the auspices of checking their eligibility for the new health care program or issuing them an "Affordable Care Card."<br /><br />There is no such thing as an "Affordable Care Card."<br /><br />One way for people to ensure the exchange site they're using is legitimate is to access it exclusively through the federal exchange site, HealthCare.gov. The federal site only directs visitors to official state exchange pages and hosts exchanges for the 16 states that declined to set up their own programs.<br /><br />The Obamacare rollout isn't the only recent large-scale government action attracting the attention of scammers. Online security firm Symantec recently posted a warning about spam messages advertising cheap cars and trucks for sale as a result of the government shutdown. Links in the emails directed users to what Symantec labeled "a bogus offer."</div>

3D-Printed Bacteria May Unlock Secrets of Disease - Circles Tech

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Bacteria are often social creatures. Suspended in colonies of varying shapes and sizes, these microbes communicate with their brethren and even other bacterial species — interactions that can sometimes make them more deadly or more resistant to antibiotics.<br /><br />Now, bacterial colonies sculpted into custom shapes by a 3-D printer could be a key to understanding how some antibiotic-resistant infections develop. The new technique uses methods similar to those employed by commercial 3-D printers, which extrude plastic, to create gelatin-based bacterial breeding grounds. These microbial condos can be carved into almost any three-dimensional shape, including pyramids and nested spheres.<br /><br />This 3-D-printing technique could be used to investigate questions like "how many bacteria have to be clustered together, and in what size and what shape, in order for that microcolony to start acting differently than the cells do on their own," said study researcher Jason Shear, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Texas at Austin.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><br /><br /><div><b><br /></b></div><br /><h3>Deadly Clusters</h3><br />Bacterial clustering is important precisely because bacteria bunched together often act differently than a single cell on its own. In some cases, bacteria even cement themselves together and onto surfaces with a glue-like substance, creating biofilms that are stubbornly resistant to antibiotics or the immune system. The plaque dentists scrape off your teeth is a biofilm that can contain dozens of interacting bacterial types, Shear told <i>LiveScience</i>.<br /><br />More deadly are the biofilms that gather in the lungs of patients with the respiratory disease cystic fibrosis. Antibiotics can halt scattered bacteria that cause lung infections in these patients, but persistent biofilms on the lung tissue lurk, waiting to spit out new bacterial vagabonds. The result, Shear said, is a cycle of infection and treatment that is often fatal for the patient. On average, people with cystic fibrosis live to just their mid-30s, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.<br /><br />Understanding biofilms and other bacterial communities is crucial for learning how to breach bacterial defenses, but "really, technologies just haven't been there," Shear said.<br /><h3>Printing Bacteria</h3><br />3-D printing may provide a way toward understanding. First, Shear and his colleagues add bacterial cells to a gelatin mixture, which they then cool to solidify, sort of like how Jell-O is made. The bacterial cells are like the fruit in this Jell-O cocktail.<br /><br />Using a laser, the researchers then carve out capsules around the suspended bacteria. The laser light causes the molecules in the gelatin to link permanently. When the resulting capsules are warmed, most of the gelatin melts away — but the laser-zapped areas stay put, creating hideouts where the bacteria can breed.<br /><br />To prove the method works, Shear and his colleagues created spheres of <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i>, a common bacterium that can cause food poisoning and skin infections. They surrounded the <i>Staph</i> bacteria with a shell of another common bacteria, <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i>. <i>Pseudomonas</i> is a pathogen often found lurking in medical equipment.<br /><br />The researchers then exposed these bacterial spheres to the antibiotic ampicillin. They found that 80% of the <i>Staph</i> survived the antibiotic when surrounded by <i>Pseudomonas</i>. In comparison, only 40% of the Staph withstood ampicillin when surrounded by an empty shell. The protection is apparently caused by <i>Pseudomonas'</i> ability to produce compounds that resist the bacteria.<br /><br />Unlike the genetic drug resistance acquired by bacteria when antibiotics are overprescribed, this communal resistance depends on the colony structure. If the protective wall of<i> Pseudomonas</i> were to disappear, the <i>Staph</i> would again be vulnerable to the antibiotics.<br /><br />The equipment used to custom-create bacterial colony shapes is pricey, Shear said, but the researchers are working on alternatives, including a cheaper laser.<br /><br />"As with commercial 3D printing, I think there is a strong likelihood that the cost of the equipment could come down dramatically," he said.<br /><br />The researchers report their work this week in the journal <i>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.</i></div>
